In 1648 Jacob van Campen was commissioned to design a new town hall for the city of Amsterdam. The result was the largest Dutch building of the seventeenth century, lavsihly decorated by artists like the sculptor Artus Quellinus and the painter Ferdinand Bol. Contemporaries regarded it as the 'eight wonder of the worlds'. Since 1808 it has been in use as a royal palace and is also known as the palace on the Dam. After an eight-year period of restoration, the palace will again be opened to the public in June 2009. This new guide tells the story of the Palace and is comprehensivly illustrated with images of the restored interior.
